Frequently Asked Questions
What do I need to bring?
A packed lunch, hot or cold drink, water, snacks and appropriate outdoor clothing including waterproof jacket and trousers (see Equipment under Essential Info) You may want to use your own maps of the area but small laminated maps will be provided on the day. If your course involves the use of a compass these can be borrowed for the duration of your course.

How fit do I need to be?
All of our courses take place outdoors in open countryside and over moorland hills. You therefore need to be comfortable walking in this environment. Ron will be happy to give individual advice regarding fitness levels as required.

How many km/miles will we walk each day?
Distances covered varies between 8 km and 13 km (5 miles and 8 miles) per day, depending on the course chosen and to some degree also on the weather. Generally, the pace tends to be leisurely/slow as time is spent looking at the map and the terrain and using a compass.

How much time will be spent indoors?
All one-day and two-day courses are spent outside.

Do I need a prior knowledge of map reading and compass use?
For the Introductory Course you do not need any prior knowledge. For the Intermediate Course you should have some knowledge of map reading but not necessarily any previous knowledge of using a compass.

What time do the courses start/finish?
The start/finish times depends on your choice of course; finish times are approximate.

Is there an exam at the end of the courses?
Not for the one-day courses. For these you just come along to learn and for your own enjoyment. For the NNAS courses we follow the National Navigation Award Scheme syllabus and assess participants effectively over the two days. The aim is to keep this element of the course as informal and as enjoyable as possible. For both the Bronze and Silver award there is a certificate on successfully completing these courses (incorporated into the course fee); a badge is also available at a small extra cost if required.

Do I need insurance?
Outside Education has public liability insurance. However, there is always an element of risk (please refer to Acknowledgement of Risk under Booking Info so we do recommend that you take out insurance in case of injury or illness causing you to cancel the course. You can get insurance relatively cheaply so it’s worth investing for peace of mind.

Do I need to bring my own food?
Yes, you will need to bring a packed lunch and drinks for each day of the course. There may be a possibility to purchase these during a lunch stop but this cannot be guaranteed.

Are all courses accessible by public transport?
Yes. All starting points are within walking distance (less than 10 min) of the 391/392 bus stops along Shrigley Road North (corner with Coppice Road and opposite the Boars Head in Higher Poynton) or a slightly longer walk (less than 20 min) from Middlewood Station.

What about accommodation?
All of our courses are non-residential. However, should you wish to book accommodation we will send a list of nearby accommodation when we receive your booking although you will need to book this independently.

Is my payment refundable if I cancel?
This depends on the amount of notice given. Please refer to the Terms and Conditions under Booking Info on the website.
